Dogue de Bordeaux French Mastiffs: Dogue de Bordeaux French Mastiffs are a shorter, stocky mastiff. Their wrinkled heads are massive, heavy and broad. Males can have a head circumference of 27-30 inches. Their muzzles are fairly short (1/3 the total length of the head), wide, powerful and thick, with a pronounced stop. Their noses are large with wide-open nostrils, color depends on their masks. Their teeth meet in an underbite. Their upper lips hang thickly down over the lower jaw. Their thick skin on their necks is loose, forming a noticeable dewlap. Their eyes are yellow to dark brown depending on the color of the dog and are set wide apart. Their ears are smal and, hang down in proportion to the dog and are darker in color. Their tails are thicker at the base tapering to a point. Their chestsare deep and broad reaching lower than the elbows. Their legs are muscular. Their coats are short and soft with loose fitting skin. Coat colors include various shades of fawn to mahogany with a darker red or black mask around and under the nose including the lips and eye rims. There are sometimes white markings on their chests and tips of their toes.
Dogue de Bordeaux French Mastiffs have a good and calm temperament. They are extremely loyal, patient and devoted to their family. Fearless and powerful, they are a first class watch dog. It is good to socialize them very well with other animals, preferably starting from an early age to avoid them being shy and afraid. Dogue de Bordeaux French Mastiffs can occasionally snore. Despite their fearsome appearance, Dogue de Bordeaux French Mastiffs are gentle with children and family members. This breed needs calm, gentle, affectionate owners that are confident and consistent.
There are numerous theories about the origin of Dogue de Bordeaux French Mastiffs. They may be descended from the Bulldog, the Tibetan Mastiff, and from the Greek and Roman Molossus, from mastiffs brought to Europe by the Alans, from the dogs of Aquitaine or from Spanish dogs from Burgos. At the end of the middle ages, Dogue de Bordeaux French Mastiffs were used as cattle drivers and personal bodyguards. Lots of Dogues died during the French Revolution. After the war their numbers rose again. Dogue de Bordeaux French Mastiffs are now thoroughly established in France and gaining popularity in other countries. The breed has served as a war dog, flock guardian, cattle herder, and family protector. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 2008.
